Reader’s Question:

I was just told that us men pay more for car insurance than women do, here in Albuquerque, NM. I’d like to know the reason why this is so with auto insurance premiums?

It is an age old debate. Would that mean that men better drivers than women? Given the chance, either gender can make a good case for themselves. Women tend to claim they’re safer drivers and less likely to succumb to road rage. Men argue that they are better when driving at high speeds and avoiding road obstacles.

Insurance companies in Albuquerque, New Mexico, however, use statistics to determine who pays more. They determine rates based on how high of a risk you are to insure. Generally, more male drivers die in car accidents than females. Because of this, car insurance companies perceive them to be a higher risk, especially new male drivers who have just received their license. Therefore, young male drivers between the ages of 16-25 generally pay more than female drivers of the same ages.

However, once male drivers reach the age of 25 and have a clean driving record, their car insurance rates start to decrease and eventually level with their female counterparts.

But anyone can save on car insurance, even a teenage male driver. Comparing quotes and raising your deductibles are just 2 of many ways that can help both men and women lower their insurance rates.
